The Swiss National Science Foundation

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is Switzerland’s leading institution for the promotion of scientific research. In particular, the SNSF enables scientists to carry out projects under their own responsibility on themes and research objectives of their choice. Applications for subsidies may concern research costs as well as salaries for collaborators, resources for scientific cooperation or networking and communication. However, they cannot cover the applicants’ own salary. SNSF grants range from one to four years and the minimum subsidy that can be requested is CHF 50,000.

The main activity of the SNSF is to evaluate project applications. In 2018, it granted 169 grants for projects within EPFL, amounting to CHF 87 millions. The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) also finances equipment purchase projects (R’Equip). These projects are co-financed by EPFL (50%) and by the SNSF (50%).
