The School of Computer and Communication Science at EPFL and the EPFL Center for Learning Sciences invite applications for a faculty position devoted to the digital transformation of vocational education and training (VET) in Switzerland.
The Swiss VET system educates and trains two-thirds of the upper-secondary students in Switzerland, for professions such as polymechanic, electronics technician, road builder, carpenter, salesperson, florist or baker. Apprentices typically spend 3-4 days per week in a company and the rest at school. The impact of the digital revolution on VET is threefold: (1) traditional job profiles are complemented or transformed by digital business, service and production technologies; (2) digital technologies such AR/VR and social platforms enable new learning and teaching approaches; (3) learning analytics offer to decision makers new visibility into each level of the VET system.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent and original research program along one or more of these axes, will participate – and be committed to excellence in – undergraduate and graduate teaching, and will supervise PhD students. His/her research program will be funded by the State Secretary of Education and will act as a hub that will interconnect the multiple stakeholders involved in the Swiss VET system: schools, corporate associations, cantonal and federal institutions.
Candidates are expected to have an interdisciplinary background with a PhD in either computer science or social sciences and a strong academic record in complementary disciplines. Given the national scope of this chair, mastery of French, German and English languages and some experience within a VET system would constitute an advantage.
EPFL offers outstanding research support and infrastructure and internationally competitive salaries. Academics in Switzerland enjoy many research funding opportunities, as well as an exceptionally high standard of living.
