Faculty Position in Hydropower

The Institute of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a faculty position in the field of Hydropower at any rank (tenure-track Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor, or Full Professor).

We seek applicants with research interests in hydraulic machines, specifically their design, operations, monitoring, and predictive maintenance, and, more broadly, the digitalization of the field of hydropower. The new faculty hire will address these challenges from an experimental, theoretical, or computational standpoint (or a combination thereof). Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to: (i) Machine-health monitoring using advanced sensors and data-driven methods; (ii) Digital twins for predictive maintenance; (iii) Fatigue and wear of components due to cavitation and sediment-laden flows; (iv) Predictive modeling of fluid-structure interaction using Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations at high Reynolds numbers, including turbulent regimes; (v) Reduced-order modeling, and industrial design of hydropower plants.

Nearly 60% of the Swiss electricity generation comes from hydropower, and Switzerland is an important supplier of the European power grid. With hydropower being such a pivotal resource of the Swiss economy and society, applicants are expected to demonstrate a potential for direct interactions with industrial partners, operators, and other stakeholders.

As a faculty member of the School of Engineering, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent and creative research program and to demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

EPFL offers internationally competitive salaries, generous research support, significant start-up resources, and an outstanding research infrastructure. Academics in Switzerland enjoy many research funding opportunities and an exceptionally high standard of living.

Applications should include a cover letter with a motivation statement, curriculum vitae, list of publications and patents, research plan, and teaching interests. Applicants should provide the names and addresses (including e-mail) of at least three (for the rank of Assistant Professor) or five (for the rank of Associate or Full Professor) references who have already agreed to supply a letter upon request. Applications must be uploaded in PDF format to the recruitment website:
