EPFL missions

Missions

EPFL is one of the two Federal Institutes of Technology in Switzerland. With the status of a national school since 1969, the young engineering school has developed on many levels, to the point of becoming one of the most renown science and technology institutions in Europe. Like its Zurich sister, the ETHZ, it relies on its three core missions:

Together with several specialised research institutes, the two universities form the ETH domain, which is directly dependent on the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (DEFR).

EPFL is located in Lausanne, Switzerland, on the shores of the largest lake in Europe, Lake Geneva, and at the foot of the Alps and Mont Blanc. Its main campus brings together in one place more than 14,000 people, including 10,000 students. Through its dynamism and the richness of the student community, EPFL has created a special spirit of curiosity and simplicity. Daily exchanges between students, researchers and entrepreneurs on campus encourage the emergence of new scientific, technological and architectural projects.

A world-class diploma

13 complete courses in bachelor and 25 in master are offered in engineering, basic sciences, computer science and communication, life sciences, as well as in the field of construction, architecture and environment. They are accompanied by exchange programs in the world’s best institutions and internships in companies to better understand the realities of the business world. The Doctoral School allows doctoral students in the same discipline to work in a community that goes beyond their laboratory. EPFL doctoral students benefit from unique skills and infrastructures to conduct their research, and continuing education makes it possible to strengthen their knowledge or develop new ones in a rapidly changing professional environment.
